Cowboy Hat Care

A well loved cowboy hat tells a story, but a little care keeps it looking its best. Here's how to clean, store and re-shape your Archer Jayne hat at home.

Cleaning

Cowboy hats are made to be worn, but not every mark should come along for the ride.

  • Dust & surface dirt: Use a soft-bristled hat brush or lint-free cloth. Always brush counterclockwise around the crown and brim (it follows the natural grain of the wool hats).
  • Spot cleaning: Light stains can be gently dabbed with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid soaking the material. For wool hats, a dry sponge or hat cleaner is best.
  • Sweatbands: Wipe the inner band with a clean, damp cloth and let it air dry completely before wearing again, it helps prevent odours or shrinkage.
  • Avoid harsh products: Never use household cleaners or soak your hat; they'll damage the fibers and shape.

Storage

How you store your hat matters just as much as how you wear it.

  • Shape protection: Rest it upside down on its crown or on a dedicated hat stand. Leaving it brim-down can warp the shape over time.
  • Avoid heat & moisture: Keep your hat in a cool, dry space away from direct sunlight or heaters.
  • Travel & off season: Store in a breathable hat box or dust bag to protect from dust and fading.
  • Hat fillers: Each Archer Jayne hat comes with complimentary hat fillers, these are perfect for helping keeping the shape and fit snug.

At-Home Steaming & Reshaping

Minor dents or brim bends can be fixed easily at home.

  • Gentle steam: Use a handheld steamer or steam from a boiling kettle (you want to steam to soften the fabric, not to burn or saturate). Steam softens the fibers so you can gently reshape the brim or crown with your hands.
  • Shape and set: Once you've adjusted it, let the hat cool and dry naturally.
  • Don't rush the process: Avoid blasting the hat with direct water or holding too close to the steam as too much moisture can cause shrinkage or uneven shaping.
